Two United States servicemen have gone missing during a multinational military training exercise in Morocco, prompting an extensive search and rescue operation involving multiple nations.
The personnel disappeared on May 2, 2026, while taking part in African Lion 2026, an annual training exercise that began this week and is scheduled to continue until May 8. According to the Moroccan Royal Armed Forces, the servicemen went missing near the Cap Draa Training Area in the vicinity of Tan Tan in southwest Morocco, close to a cliff formation in the region.
US Africa Command has confirmed that American, Moroccan and partner nation forces have mobilised ground, aerial and maritime assets to locate the missing personnel. The command stated that the incident remains under active investigation while search efforts continue across the area. Officials emphasised that their primary concern centres on the welfare of the service members and support for their families during this period.
African Lion represents one of the largest military exercises conducted annually on the African continent, bringing together forces from the United States, Morocco and various allied nations for joint training operations. The exercise typically focuses on enhancing interoperability between participating militaries and strengthening regional security partnerships through coordinated land, air and sea-based scenarios.
The training area where the disappearance occurred sits in Morocco’s southwestern coastal region, an area characterised by rugged terrain and clifftop geography that presents particular challenges for military operations and search efforts. Weather conditions and the remote nature of the location have added complexity to the ongoing rescue mission.
This incident occurs as Britain continues to reassess its own international military commitments and partnership arrangements following recent shifts in defence policy and alliance structures across the Western world.
